Oxford University Press Museum: OED Tolkien Letter
J.R.R. Tolkien was a contributor to the Oxford English Dictionary (notably the W’s, if I remember correctly), and sometime later wrote a letter to the dictionary’s editor explaining the origins of the word "Hobbit"
